George Tomal (1924-2008).Dancer, choreographer, and a founding director of New Jersey Ballet, George Tomal died in February. A Chicago native, he danced with American Ballet Theatre American Ballet Theatre, one of the foremost international dance companies of the 20th cent. It was founded in 1937 as the Mordkin Ballet and reorganized as the Ballet Theatre in 1940 under the direction of Lucia Chase and Rich Pleasant. , Roland Petit's Ballets des Champs Elysees and Igor Schwezoff's Ballet Concerts Company. In 1958, he formed the New Jersey Ballet Company with Carolyn Clark. During the '60s he co-directed the Denver Ballet Arts Center. Tomal choreographed more than a hundred dance works, including 16 productions for New Jersey State Opera and dozens of ballets for the New Jersey Ballet, including Poco po·co adv.
