The incident helped precipitate the Spanish-American War (Apr., 1898). Commanded by Capt. Charles Sigsbee, the ship had been sent (Jan. Sunday Telegram. During his 30year career in journalism, he worked for The Wichita Eagle in Kansas and as an editor, editorial writer, and reporter in Indiana, Idaho, and Oregon. Neavoll recently won a Global Media Award from The Population Institute in 1996, a Human Rights Award from the Portland chapter of Amnesty International Amnesty International (AI,) human-rights organization founded in 1961 by Englishman Peter Benenson; it campaigns internationally against the detention of prisoners of conscience, for the fair trial of political prisoners, to abolish the death penalty and torture of in 1995, and the first Portland Bias Crime Task Force's Diversity Bridge Building Award in 1995. |
