Geographical Information Systems: An Instructional Guide to Major Concepts and Their Implementation.

University of Iowa Not to be confused with Iowa State University.
The first faculty offered instruction at the University in March 1855 to students in the Old Mechanics Building, situated where Seashore Hall is now. In September 1855, the student body numbered 124, of which, 41 were women.

 in full compact disc read-only memory

Type of computer storage medium that is read optically (e.g., by a laser).
 resource contains learner-centered instructional activities and software for analyzing the geographic patterns of disease events. Users first learn to match health information (by address) to digital maps. Once this step is completed, the software on the CD-ROM can be used to prepare input for geographic information systems (GIS) software. The goal is to make isoline i·so·line

 maps showing areas of high and low disease incidence rates. Also, individually geo-coded health data can be aggregated to any defined geography including census entities or other areas of interest (e.g., the pollution footprint of a point-source pollutant).

The materials on this CD-ROM give users the key steps in performing a detailed GIS analysis of health data:

* acquiring digital road maps of local areas from public-domain sources or private vendors;

* acquiring software that can match addresses stored in health files to a digital map;

* making tests of statistical significance for geographical patterns of diseases;

* relating the geographic patterns of incidence to socioeconomic data from sources such as the U.S. Census;

* evaluating the geographical distribution the natural arrangements of animals and plants in particular regions or districts.
