Gensym releases major new version of G2; New Windows Platform Availability Encourages Enterprise-wide Deployment.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 26, 1995--Gensym Corp., leading provider of software for creating intelligent real-time systems Real-time systems

Computer systems in which the computer is required to perform its tasks within the time restraints of some process or simultaneously with the system it is assisting.
, announced today that it has released a new version of G2, the company's flagship product A primary product of a company, which is typically why the company was founded and/or what made it well known. For example, MS-DOS, Windows and the Microsoft Office suite have been flagship products of Microsoft. CorelDRAW is a flagship product of Corel Corporation. .

and OpenVMS platforms, Gensym is supporting G2 on Microsoft Windows See Windows.

NT for mission-critical applications. Gensym also supports Windows 3.1 for client applications and single-user off-line applications. The 4.0 release includes a number of significant feature enhancements improving G2's real-time performance, knowledge representation, graphical-user interface, and client/server capabilities. Pricing for G2 4.0 starts at $7,500 for a run-time license.

"With G2 on PCs, organizations can more cost-effectively distribute intelligent applications throughout their operations," said Gensym Chairman and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  Lowell Hawkinson. "We plan to extend our PC offerings to include Windows95 by the end of the year. Besides extending the platform availability, we have enriched G2's object-oriented computing environment by adding methods, multiple inheritance In object-oriented programming, a class that can contain more than one parent. Contrast with single inheritance.

, object passing, and new object libraries. We have also enhanced G2's real-time abilities by adding sub-second capabilities and improving overall performance. Internal benchmarks have seen the time for procedure execution and bridge communication cut by 50 percent. Current G2 users will also be pleased with enhancements to G2's end-user interface development environment," Hawkinson concluded.

Gensym's family of G2 software products help organizations capture and leverage the expert knowledge of their most talented personnel in intelligent real-time systems that improve quality, increase reliability, and lower operating costs operating costs nplgastos mpl operacionales . Typical applications include process optimization, real-time quality management, supervisory control, advanced control using fuzzy logic fuzzy logic, a multivalued (as opposed to binary) logic developed to deal with imprecise or vague data. Classical logic holds that everything can be expressed in binary terms: 0 or 1, black or white, yes or no; in terms of Boolean algebra, everything is in one set or  and neural networks, process design and simulation, and dynamic scheduling.

Enhancements to Object-oriented Environment Benefit Development, Reusability

"To boost reusability and give beginners a jump start, we have enhanced G2's already strong object capabilities," explained Jim Pepe, Gensym vice president of product development. Methods have been implemented to allow object behavior to be encapsulated within the class definition.

For example, each subclass In programming, to add custom processing to an existing function or subroutine by hooking into the routine at a predefined point and adding additional lines of code.

subclass - derived class
of `tank' might have its own filling method. One tank might use a volume measurement and another a weight measurement. Multiple inheritance has also been added so that any object class can inherit capabilities or attributes from a combination of other classes. G2 4.0 also includes object passing. This enables objects to be shared among G2s and between G2 and external applications.

Greater Client/Server Access with Telewindows and New International Fonts

"Gensym's Telewindows helps companies rapidly proliferate applications and thus achieve a faster return on their investment," continued Pepe. "Available client/server tools allow data and object sharing. Gensym's G2 and Telewindows support these also, but we go further and offer full application sharing. This enables effective work-team development and concurrent on-line use." G2 4.0 and Telewindows allow cross-language teams to work together more easily. Previous G2 versions included Japanese and most European language fonts. G2 4.0 includes character sets for Russian and Korean as well, and the licensing procedure has been revised so that all supported fonts are always available. "This means that using Telewindows, one user of a shared application could be working from Korea in Korean while another team member simultaneously works in French or German at another site, for example," said Pepe.

GUI (Graphical User Interface) A graphics-based user interface that incorporates movable windows, icons and a mouse. The ability to resize application windows and change style and size of fonts are the significant advantages of a GUI vs. a character-based interface.  Enhancements Speed Up Development

In response to customer demand, G2 4.0 includes an enhanced version of G2 GUIDE, G2's object-oriented graphical user interface builder A graphical user interface builder, or GUI builder, is a software development tool that simplifies the creation of GUIs by allowing the designer to arrange widgets using a drag-and-drop WYSIWYG editor. . G2 GUIDE is fully integrated with G2's object environment and is portable across all G2 platforms. G2 4.0 also includes "jump start" object libraries that contain hundreds of icons from various industrial sectors as well as object templates such as alarm handlers, customized tool bars, and maps.
