The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  agreement with Science Systems, a U.K. based provider of software for satellite mission control systems. Science Systems will use Gensym's G2(R) software in its Space UNiT product, which improves the efficiency of spacecraft operations by monitoring operational status and intelligently planning, scheduling, configuring, editing, and executing mission procedures in real time.

"Science Systems is the European market leader in the development of software for satellite mission control systems," observed John Auburn, Science Systems' Sales Director. "We also have one of the largest pools of experienced G2 intelligent systems professionals within Europe. By combining these areas of expertise, the Space UNiT product has been developed as a tool to construct intelligent real-time systems Real-time systems

Computer systems in which the computer is required to perform its tasks within the time restraints of some process or simultaneously with the system it is assisting.
for space and non-space industry applications. G2 provides a rich environment for the specification of knowledge used within satellite control. This, along with the ease of integration and Gensym's new Java user interface capabilities, compelled us to use Gensym products."

"Traditional satellite control systems are based largely on operators monitoring screens of information and carrying out repetitive pre-set tasks," noted Carl Davies, Gensym's Vice-President for Europe, Middle East and Africa. "However, increasing demands are now being placed on satellite operations due to the expanding population of satellites and the complexity of the environments within which these spacecraft operate. To control escalating costs, satellite operating companies are looking to advanced techniques to assist in the day-to-day operations of the modern satellite control center. The G2-based Space UNiT offers a powerful solution for this problem," he added.

Space UNiT provides an environment for specifying mission operations models and reflects the current status of spacecraft and ground segment control systems and mission operations. UNiT has an open, highly extensible and portable architecture, and an interface that allows users to accomplish their tasks with no specialist software knowledge. Ultimately, this means lower maintenance costs and increased efficiency through the automated scheduling and monitoring of procedures and actions Space UNiT carries out.

Space UNiT will be used by the European Meteorological Satellite meteorological satellite: see satellite, artificial; weather satellite.  Organization (EUMETSAT EUMETSAT European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites

) for the Meteosat Second Generation control facility, by the European Telecommunications Satellite Organization (EUTELSAT EUTELSAT European Telecommunications Satellite ) for its constellation of telecommunications satellites, and by the U.K. Ministry of Defense for control automation of its SKYNET satellites (fourth generation military/defense communications satellite communications satellite  artificial satellite that functions as part of a global radio-communications network.
