Genomics Research in the Prairie provinces. (Business Profile).Genome Prairie was established in 2000 as a not-for-profit corporation A not-for-profit corporation is a corporation created by statute, government or judicial authority that is not intended to provide a profit to the owners or members. A corporation that is organized to provide profits to its owners or members is a for-profit corporation. in partnership with Genome Canada and other funding agencies. This was catalyzed by an investment in 2000-01 from Industry Canada Industry Canada is the department of the Government of Canada with responsibility for regional economic development, investment, and innovation/research and development. The department employs 6104 FTEs across Canada. of $300 million, which after matching is projected to increase in value to $600 million or greater. These funds are invested in a series of projects across the country that are selected by peer review through an international panel of experts. The overall goal is to support research and development in the disciplines of genomics, proteomics, bioinformatics, instrumentation development and GELS (Genome Ethical, Legal and Social issues), with the intent that this will bring scientific, medical, economic and social benefits to the country, and furthermore allow Canada to become internationally competitive in this exciting research area. Genome Prairie is focused primarily on the support of research activities taking place in universities and federal laboratories in the Provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, but our projects also include researchers in every region of the country and collaborations with other scientists abroad. Our projects build upon a strong base of genomics, proteomics and informatics research that is already present. The total value of funds (including matching elements) that has been committed to Genome Prairie at present is $90 million, targeted to agricultural (plant and animal) and human health genomics, instrumentation development, a bioinformatics technology platform, and GELS research. At present we sponsor six projects (with hopes for more in the near future): * Functional Genomics of Abiotic Stress in Wheat and Canola Crops led by Dr. Graham Scoles at the University of Saskatchewan The University of Saskatchewan (U of S) is a coeducational public research university located on the east side of the South Saskatchewan River in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. The University is celebrating its centennial year in 2007. (with colleagues in BC, Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec). * Commercialization and Society and its Policy and Strategic Implications led by Dr. Edna Einsiedel at the University of Calgary (with colleagues in Edmonton and Saskatoon Saskatoon (săskət n`), city (1991 pop. 186,058), S central Sask., Canada, on the South Saskatchewan River. ).
* Functional Pathogenomics of Mucosal Immunity led by Dr. Lorne Babiuk at the Veterinary Infectious Disease Infectious disease A pathological condition spread among biological species. Infectious diseases, although varied in their effects, are always associated with viruses, bacteria, fungi, protozoa, multicellular parasites and aberrant proteins known as prions. Organization (VIDO VIDO Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization (US) ) at the University of Saskatchewan and Dr. Bob Hancock at the University of British Columbia Locations Vancouver The Vancouver campus is located at Point Grey, a twenty-minute drive from downtown Vancouver. It is near several beaches and has views of the North Shore mountains. The 7. , in partnership with Genome BC and participation by Anigenics and Inimex corporations. * The Development of Enabling Technologies for Proteomic and Genomic Research led by Dr. William Davidson of MDS MDS, n See temporomandibular pain-dysfunction syndrome. MDS 1 Maternal deprivation syndrome, see there 2 Myelodysplastic syndrome, see there Sciex, Toronto, and co-led by Drs. Harrison and Li at the University of Alberta, with other researchers in Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec. * Enhancing Crop Value through Genomics led by Dr. Wilf Keller at the NRC NRC abbr. 1. National Research Council 2. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Noun 1. NRC - an independent federal agency created in 1974 to license and regulate nuclear power plants Plant Biotechnology Institute in Saskatoon in cooperation with Agriculture and Agri-food Canada The Department of Agriculture and Agri-Food, also referred to as Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) (French: Agriculture et Agroalimentaire Canada), is the department of the government of Canada with responsibility for policies governing agriculture . * An Integrated and Distributed Bioinformatics Platform for Genome Canada led by Dr. Christoph Sensen at the University of Calgary, with additional researchers in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Nova Scotia. We expect that progress on these and other genomics-related projects that are under development will result in major scientific and technological advances that will lead to improvements in health, the quality and productivity of our food industry, the ethical underpinnings of our future research efforts, and new technologies to acquire data and understand the biological basis for living organisms.
