The International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) (French: Tribunal pénal international pour le Rwanda, Kinyarwanda: Urukiko Nshinjabyaha Mpuzamahanga rwagenewe u Rwanda on 1 June sentenced a Belgian journalist to 12 years in prison for inciting people to commit genocide in Rwanda in 1994. The Trial Chamber noted that Mr. Ruggiu, who worked with the radio station from 6 January to 14 July 1994 during the genocide, continued his broadcasts even after he had been aware that they were contributing to the massacres. The first non-Rwandan to be charged by the Tribunal, Mr. Ruggiu had changed his plea to guilty on 15 May. He is the eighth accused person to be convicted by the Tribunal and the third to plead guilty to charges of genocide and crimes against humanity committed in Rwanda in 1994. |
