Gennum Showcases ActiveConnect(TM) Consumer Connectivity Solutions Throughout CES.

New High-performance, Long-distance Cable Options to be Showcased at CES 2008

BURLINGTON, Ontario Burlington (2006 population 164,415) is a city located in the Golden Horseshoe, across Lake Ontario and Burlington Bay harbour from Hamilton, in Halton Region, Ontario, Canada.  -- Showcasing the longest reach, highest performance high-definition multimedia interface The High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) is a licensable audio/video connector interface for transmitting uncompressed, encrypted digital streams. HDMI connects DRM-enforcing digital audio/video sources, such as a set-top box, a Blu-ray Disc player, a PC running  (HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) A digital interface for audio and video signals designed as a single-cable solution for home theater and consumer electronics equipment. ) connectivity solution, Gennum Corporation (TSX TSX Toronto Stock Exchange (TSE before April, 2002)

Supporting distances up to 100 meters, the ActiveConnect solution supports HDMI 1.3/digital visual interface (DVI (1) (Digital Video Interactive) An earlier compression technique that provided up to 72 minutes of full-screen video on a CD-ROM. Acquired by Intel in 1988 from RCA's Sarnoff Research labs, Princeton, NJ, DVI never caught on. ) and assures that disparate multimedia products will connect and stream multimedia at the highest specifications available today at distances previously unattainable in a single cable. Additionally, Gennum is previewing its ActiveConnect solution supporting the new DisplayPort 1.1 standard, giving a technology demonstration that highlights PC to display connectivity up to 100 meters.

The unprecedented capabilities of the ActiveConnect solution will be demonstrated in multiple locations at next week's CES, including Gennum's booth in the popular HDMI Pavilion, Gennum's booth in the DisplayPort Technology Zone, at the CES Unveiled media event held at the Venetian Hotel on January 5 and at the DisplayPort press conference held at the Venetian Hotel on January 8.

Targeting high-rate HDMI applications, the semiconductor-based solution from Gennum is comprised of a transmitter and a receiver and enables consumer, business and industrial applications to stream HDMI content, via low-cost cable, at distances an order of magnitude A change in quantity or volume as measured by the decimal point. For example, from tens to hundreds is one order of magnitude. Tens to thousands is two orders of magnitude; tens to millions is three orders of magnitude, etc.  greater than cables available today. As important, the new solution supports current and legacy versions of HDMI, including 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3, enabling backward compatibility See backward compatible.

(jargon) backward compatibility - Able to share data or commands with older versions of itself, or sometimes other older systems, particularly systems it intends to supplant.
 with existing equipment.

"Increasingly, consumers are acquiring HD products operating at ever-higher levels of performance, with HDMI 1.3 being the latest. The demand for cables that connect these devices is also increasing, but consumers want to maintain the highest level of performance yet go longer and longer distances to achieve the ultimate multimedia experience in their home theaters," said Martin Rofheart, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Gennum's Analog & Mixed-Signal Division. "The Gennum solution is unique in that we can offer cable manufacturers a cost-effective solution that addresses this consumer demand. Indeed, our ActiveConnect solution represents a significant achievement in high-performance, long reach connectivity, which is an important issue for attendees at this year's CES."

Industry Support for High Performance, Long Reach HD Multimedia Interface Solutions

With strong industry support for its solution, the Gennum ActiveConnect solution has been selected by a host of leading cable and A/V (1) (Audio/Video) Refers to equipment and applications that deal with sound and sight. The A/V world includes microphones, tape recorders, audio mixers, still and video cameras, film projectors, slide projectors, VCRs, CD and DVD players/recorders, amplifiers and  providers (see related announcements dated today at www.gennum.com/activeconnect).

The following companies have announced products and plans to leverage the Gennum ActiveConnect solution in 2008:

* Gefen--will leverage the ActiveConnect technology in its new HDMI Over RGB (Red Green Blue) The computer's native color space, which is the color system for capturing and displaying images.
