Genesis Microchip (Nasdaq:GNSS) today introduced the gm5020 LCD monitor controller, the most highly integrated chip the company has ever produced. The announcement came from the floor of the Society For Information Display (SID) show. Targeted on the dual-interface LCD monitor market, the gm5020 image processor offers numerous integration features to provide a flexible, cost-effective solution for the growing market of LCD monitors with both analog and digital interfaces. Dual-interface monitors ensure monitor-to-PC compatibility by offering connection to legacy VGA-style graphics cards as well as cards supporting the emerging DVI standard. "Dual interface monitors are growing extremely rapidly from about 900,000 units or 13% of the worldwide LCD monitor market in 2000 to more than 5 million units next year," said David Mentley, Senior Vice President of market-research firm Stanford Resources. "Our most recent report, 'Flat Panel Monitor Market Trends,' predicts the dual interface solution will peak in 2003 at 63% of the market, after which the analog interface will begin fading away and the digital-only interface will prevail." The gm5020 offers High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) is a form of Digital Rights Management (DRM) developed by Intel Corporation to control digital audio and video content as it travels across Digital Visual Interface (DVI) or High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) (HDCP) and incorporates proven technology from existing Genesis processors, including: - Integrated triple ADC - On-chip DVI-compliant TMDS receiver - Enhanced bit-mapped and character-mapped OSD controller - Integrated frame-rate conversion - Variable scaling and sharpening algorithms - Digital video input port - Single-chassis solution from XGA up to SXGA "Our customers can now reduce the number of components they need in their monitors to just the gm5020 chip and a low-cost microcontroller," said Andre Bouwer, Genesis Microchip's gm5020 Product Marketing Manager.
