Genesis Microchip Genesis Microchip Inc. is a leading edge world wide supplier of integrated circuits (ICs) for video processors in flat panel LCD TVs and Monitors. Founded in 1987 by Paul Russo [9] in Markham, Ontario, Canada and it became a public company in 1998 [10] and now  (Nasdaq:GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) The European term for a global satellite-based radio navigation system. See Galileo. ) today announced its second dual-interface LCD controller chip. The news comes from the floor of the 17th Annual Flat Information Displays Conference.

Designed to address the growing UXGA-resolution (1600 x 1200) market, the new gm5060 dual-interface LCD controller offers many key integration features to provide a cost-effective solution for the growing market of UXGA LCD monitors with both analog and digital interfaces. Dual-interface monitors ensure monitor-to-PC compatibility by offering connection to legacy VGA-style graphics cards as well as cards supporting the DVI (1) (Digital Video Interactive) An earlier compression technique that provided up to 72 minutes of full-screen video on a CD-ROM. Acquired by Intel in 1988 from RCA's Sarnoff Research labs, Princeton, NJ, DVI never caught on.  standard.

"We've had extremely positive customer feedback from our XGA/SXGA dual-interface part," said Anders Frisk Anders Frisk (born 18 February 1963 in Gothenburg, Sweden) is an insurance agent by trade and a former football referee. Frisk was forced to early retirement from refereeing amid pressure due to death threats made against him and his family. , Genesis Microchip's Vice President of Marketing. "We decided to expand the chip's architecture to accommodate the emerging UXGA market - and so we've produced the world's first fully integrated dual-interface UXGA LCD controller."

"We believe the UXGA resolution will become dominant within the next five years," said Sam Wu, General Manager of Taiwan's Key Solution Inc., an LCD supplier to OEMs such as Sony Corp. "We're excited that Genesis is entering this market by producing a cutting-edge dual-interface controller - and we look forward to evaluating the chip."

The gm5060 chip is based on proven technology from existing Genesis processors, including:
- Integrated triple ADC, up to UXGA resolution

- On-chip "Ultra-Reliable DVI" receiver, up to 165 MHz operation

- High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP)

- Advanced OSD controller

- NTSC/PAL video input port

The gm5060 will be available in the first quarter of 2001 in a 336-pin PBGA PBGA Plastic Ball Grid Array  package. It will sell for $40 in volume quantities.

Stanford Resources' 17th Annual Flat Information Displays Conference runs Dec. 12-14, 2000 at the Monterey Conference Center, Monterey, Calif. The conference is a leading display industry event, which includes expert forecasts and updates on the latest technology trends and business developments in the flat panel display A thin display screen for computer and TV usage. The first flat panels appeared on laptop computers in the mid-1980s, and the LCD technology became the standard. Stand-alone LCD screens became available for desktop computers in the mid-1990s and exceeded sales of CRTs for the first time  industry. More information can be found at www.stanfordresources.com.
