General Counsel appointed for Utility Workers Union of America, AFL-CIO.


WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 12, 1996--Donald E. Wightman, president of the Utility Workers Union of America The Utility Workers Union of America (UWUA) is a labor union in the United States. It has a membership of 50,000 and is affiliated with the AFL-CIO , AFL-CIO, announced that he has appointed Attorney Joanne F. Goldstein of Boston, as general counsel of the national union, which represents approximately 50,000 employees in the electric, gas and water industries.

Goldstein has practiced union-side labor law for 22 years. Since 1982, she has been of counsel to Segal, Roitman & Coleman, in Boston. Goldstein will maintain her office in Boston as well as working out of the national office in Washington.

Goldstein has represented many local unions, affiliated with various national unions throughout the Northeast, many of which represent workers in the electric, gas and water industries.

Goldstein has served on the advisory committee of the AFL-CIO Lawyers Coordinating Committee, as the New England coordinator of the AFL-CIO Women's Job Bank, and on the board of the New England region of the Jewish Labor Committee The Jewish Labor Committee is an American secular Jewish organization dedicated to promoting labour union interests in Jewish communities, and Jewish interests within unions. .

She has taught classes in labor law and labor education at the University of Massachusetts-Boston, the American Arbitration Association The American Arbitration Association (AAA) is a private enterprise in the business of arbitration, and one of several arbitration organizations that administers arbitration proceedings. The AAA also administers mediation and other forms of alternative dispute resolution. , Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education The purpose of continuing legal education is to maintain or sharpen the skills of licensed attorneys and judges. Accredited courses examine new areas of the law or review basic practice and trial principles.  Inc., the Labor Guild and at many union seminars.

Goldstein graduated from the University of Michigan (body, education) University of Michigan - A large cosmopolitan university in the Midwest USA. Over 50000 students are enrolled at the University of Michigan's three campuses. The students come from 50 states and over 100 foreign countries.  and the Hofstra University School of Law The School of Law at Hofstra University was founded in 1970 and accredited by the ABA in 1971. The school now offers a JD, a joint JD/MBA degree, a JD/MS in Taxation and LLM degrees in International Law, American Law (for foreign law graduates) and Family law.  where she was a member of the Law Review. She has been admitted to the bar in Massachusetts, the Federal District Court in Boston and the First Circuit Court of Appeals.

Goldstein lives in Newton Centre, Mass., with her husband and three children.
