GAITHERSBURG, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 18, 2003

Gene Logic Inc. (Nasdaq:GLGC) today announced it has expanded its BioExpress(TM) solutions with the launch of its newest disease-specific information product, the BioExpress Inflammation Suite.

The formal launch occurred during the Molecular Medicine Marketplace Conference in Santa Clara, California Santa Clara, California (IPA: /ˌsæntəˈklærə/) , founded in 1777 and incorporated in 1852, is a city in Santa Clara County, in the U.S. state of California. .

The Inflammation Suite is a resource of gene expression information developed for pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies focused on creating products that target the genomic mechanisms underlying inflammatory and autoimmune diseases Autoimmune diseases
A group of diseases, like rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus, in which immune cells turn on the body, attacking various tissues and organs.

Mentioned in: Complement Deficiencies, Premature Menopause
.

The Suite currently consists of three gene expression content components: 1) human tissue samples and associated clinical annotations; 2) animal disease models; and 3) in vitro in vitro /in vi·tro/ (in ve´tro) [L.] within a glass; observable in a test tube; in an artificial environment.

in vi·tro
adj.
In an artificial environment outside a living organism.
 cellular model systems.

Diseases, as well as specific disease states and stages, represented in the Suite include: Rheumatoid Arthritis rheumatoid arthritis

Chronic, progressive autoimmune disease causing connective-tissue inflammation, mostly in synovial joints. It can occur at any age, is more common in women, and has an unpredictable course.
, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Definition

Systemic lupus erythematosus (also called lupus or SLE) is a disease where a person's immune system attacks and injures the body's own organs and tissues. Almost every system of the body can be affected by SLE.
, Ulcerative Colitis ulcerative colitis

Inflammation of the colon, especially of its mucous membranes. The inflamed membranes develop patches of tiny ulcers, and the diarrhea contains blood and mucus.
, Crohn's disease Crohn's disease: see colitis. , Hashimoto's Thyroiditis Hashimoto's thyroiditis
The self destruction of the thyroid cells from an autoimmune disorder.

Mentioned in: Hypoparathyroidism

Hashimoto's thyroiditis
, as well as Osteoarthritis osteoarthritis
 or osteoarthrosis or degenerative joint disease

Most common joint disorder, afflicting over 80% of those who reach age 70. It does not involve excessive inflammation and may have no symptoms, especially at first.
.

The Inflammation Suite is expected to expand to include gene expression data representing additional inflammatory diseases, including respiratory inflammation and other autoimmune diseases.

The Inflammation Suite will enable researchers to:

-- make rapid and accurate comparison of gene expression profiles from normal and diseased tissues;

-- conduct multiple queries for animal models of disease in different stages of development over a range of tissue samples;

-- characterize transcriptional regulation at the cellular level; and,

-- identify and prioritize potential targets and pathways for therapeutic intervention, diagnostic markers for disease stratification, flare and remission, and therapeutic responsiveness/non-responsive ness.

Dr. Debra Barnes, Scientific Director, Inflammatory Disease Program at Gene Logic, commented, "We are thrilled to be launching this new Suite. The ability to have access to this well defined and difficult to obtain breadth of inflammation samples should streamline and enhance discovery efforts focused on pinpointing the genes and pathways involved in human inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. We will continue to work with our pharmaceutical and biotechnology customers to ensure the diseases and models represented are, and continue to be, of greatest utility."
