GenCorp's Aerojet signs $82.4M contract modification with NASA Goddard for earth sensing instruments.FAIRLAWN, OHIO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--October 31, 1995--GenCorp's aerospace and defense segment, Aerojet, has signed a $82.4 million contract modification with NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center The Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) is a major NASA space research laboratory established on May 1, 1959 as NASA's first space flight center. GSFC employs approximately 10,000 civil servants and contractors, and is located approximately 6.5 miles northeast of Washington, D.C. for four additional shipsets of Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit-A (AMSU-A AMSU-A Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit A ) instruments. The modification brings the total contract value to $128 million. The AMSU-A instruments, which are flown on polar orbiting satellites, measure temperature and humidity profiles from sea level to 45 km altitude. Information received is used by the National Weather Service for weather forecasting, climatologists for long-term global weather change studies, and scientists as part of NASA's Mission to Planet Earth, Earth Observing System The Earth Observing System (EOS) is a program of NASA comprising a series of artificial satellite missions and scientific instruments in Earth orbit designed for long-term global observations of the land surface, biosphere, atmosphere, and oceans of the Earth. (EOS). With this contract modification, Aerojet will deliver a total of five shipsets: one for NASA's EOS program and four for the NOAA/NASA TIROS TIROS Total Internal Reflection Optical System (Inova flashlight) TIROS Television and Infrared Observation Satellite Program and the European Meteorological Satellite Program. Each AMSU-A shipset consists of two units - A1 and A2 - with 15 channels operating over a frequency range of 23 to 89 GHz (1 GHz equals 1,000,000,000 cycles per second). Delivery of the first unit is slated for May 1998 with the final unit to be delivered in September of 1999. "This additional work provides a solid employment and technology base that is important to our competitive position on the forthcoming National Polar Orbiting Operational Satellite System, or NPOESS NPOESS National Polar-Orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (US NOAA) , program," said George Padgett, vice president of Aerojet's Earth Sensing Systems integrated product sector.
