(R) Systems Inc. and Object Technology International Inc. (OTI) -- today announced a technology and marketing agreement to create a version of ENVY/Developer supporting GemStone Smalltalk.

Developers building three-tier enterprisewide business object solutions will now be able to integrate application code across development environments seamlessly, independent of where the code will actually execute.

"As a result of this partnership, we will now be able to control our team development efforts from a single repository," said Mark Anderson Mark Anderson

for multi-programmer Smalltalk development environments, is a collaborative component management environment allowing teams of Smalltalk programmers to develop and reuse libraries of components. It includes the version control, configuration management and team programming features required for large-scale application development.

Developers will be able to integrate ENVY/Developer for GemStone with other ENVY/Developer versions, such as that for ParcPlace-Digitalk's VisualWorks and IBM's VisualAge, to effectively build enterprise business model solutions.

"Smalltalk vendors are pulling together to deliver solid customer solutions," said Reed Phillips, executive director, Smalltalk Industry Council. "As the market matures, customers will continue to raise the standards for Smalltalk development. IBM's recent acquisition of OTI is a strong vote of confidence for Smalltalk technology."

Availability

OTI will develop, maintain and enhance ENVY/Developer for GemStone, while GemStone will license, market and distribute it to its customer base. Product will be available during the second half of 1996. Pricing has not yet been established.
