Gay media boycott of Coors is a myth.Modern Brewery Age carried a story in the August 13th edition, reporting an alleged "gay media boycott" of the Coors Brewing Company. The story was based on an article published in the London Observer. According to Coors spokesperson Aimee St. Clair, the boycott story is baseless. "There is no boycott of Coors Brewing Co. ads in the gay and lesbian community," St. Clair said. "In fact, our most recent campaign in gay media includes Olympian Bruce Hayes and it has run in many gay publications in the U.S. this spring. It has never been rejected by a single publication. Two earlier print campaigns also were placed successfully and ran in many gay publications." The London Observer article also included a quote from the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) that the group has since disavowed. In a statement, the Human Rights Campaign said, "HRC was not quoted accurately in the story that originally appeared in the London Observer. The Human Rights Campaign continues to applaud the Coors Brewing Company's leadership in making its workplace equal, inclusive and welcoming for gays and lesbians." St. Clair said the story originated with a reporter at the London Observer, and was based on erroneous and outdated information. "Frankly, he just made some things up," she said. "The story is untrue." |
