In Massachusetts gays have the right to marry--and so do gay storybook characters. At least that's true in the Lexington Public Schools district, where gay-themed children's books like King & King, about two betrothed princes, are included in the curriculum. That policy upset two local families who are suing district superintendent Paul Ash and other officials after their kids were read the queer fairy tale at Joseph Estabrook Elementary School in March. The parents allege their civil rights were violated because they weren't informed beforehand.

But under Massachusetts Department of Education policy they didn't have to be, Ash said. "Staff has no obligation to notify parents of discussions, activities, or materials that simply reference same-gender parents or that otherwise recognize the existence of differences in sexual orientation."
