Gay guide to the Oscars: we're here, we're queer, we're going to the Oscars. Our tip sheet tells you whom to root for at this year's Academy Awards. (The Hollywood Issue).

The Hours

Why It's Here Perhaps you missed our cover story and should consider turning back to page 40.

Why We Care While Meryl Streep Noun 1. Meryl Streep - United States film actress (born in 1949)

Edward Allen Harris (born November 28, 1950) is an Academy Award-nominated American actor, known for his performances in The Right Stuff, The Abyss, Apollo 13, Pollock, and
also scored a nomination for playing a gay poet facing the end of his life. Director Stephen Daldry, who's now "Who's Now" was a daily series aired during SportsCenter throughout July 2007, in which viewers helped ESPN determine the ultimate sports star by considering both on-field success and off-field buzz.  two for two on being nominated for Best Director (his previous movie was Billy Elliot), is gay but married to a woman. (He's British--go figure.) And out power player Scott Rudin was a driving force in making this movie happen.

[A] Far From Heaven

Why It's Here The Academy apparently has room in its heart for only one gay-themed melodrama, and when it fell for The Hours it turned its back on out auteur auteur (ōtör`), in film criticism, a director who so dominates the film-making process that it is appropriate to call the director the auteur, or author, of the motion picture.  Todd Haynes's exquisite homage to director Douglas Sirk's soapy classics. But while we ache for the nominations Heaven wasn't sent for Best Picture, Director, Supporting Actor supporting actor nattore m non protagonista  (Dennis Quaid), Costume Design, and Art Direction ...

Why We Care ... we can still revel in the four nods the movie received and so richly deserves: Best Screenplay (Haynes), Best Actress (Julianne Moore, whose '50s hausfrau haus·frau

[B] Chicago

Why It's Here Last year, Moulin Rouge laid the groundwork for audiences (and Academy members) to love musicals again, and here comes the razzle-dazzling screen version of the Kander-Ebb-Fosse stage concoction. Show-tune queens celebrated the movie's 13 nominations, even if they were miffed miff

 that Richard Gere got stiffed.

Why We Care Chicago's not just windy, it's gay, gay, gay, thanks to the contributions of its out, proud, and nominated screenwriter (Bill Condon), director (Rob Marshall), and executive producers (Craig Zadan and Neil Meron). And we're pretty sure that Queen Latifah's Mama Morton accepts more than cash from her lady inmates in return for special favors.

[C] Frida

Why It's Here If Madonna couldn't develop a movie about bisexual Communist painter Frida Kahlo, how could a Mexican upstart named Salma Hayek do any better? Six Oscar nominations, that's how much better, starting with an upset Best Actress nod for La Hayek, plus nods for Best Score (Elliot Goldenthal) and Best Song ("Burn It Blue," music by Goldenthal, lyrics by director Julie Taymor). Aside from getting nominations for Best Art Direction and Costume Design, Frida's a cinch cinch

, and we adored the movie's performance by 83-year-old lesbian singer Chavela Vargas--a lover of Kahlo's in real life. Now, folks, how about showing your cojones Cojones IPA: [ko'xones] is a vulgar Spanish word for testicles, corresponding to "balls" or "bollocks". Usage in English  one more time and putting Vargas onstage to sing Frida's nominated song at the Oscars?

[D] Talk to Her

Why It's Here One of Pedro Almodovar's least gay films wound up also being one of his most provocative and unforgettable. And even though Spain selected another movie to compete for Best Foreign Film (one that didn't make the cut, incidentally), the out filmmaker scored two major nominations: Best Director and Best Original Screenplay.

[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]

Why We Care Besides being one of a few openly gay men to garner a major Oscar nomination, Almodovar is the first Spaniard to make it to the final five in either of the categories in which he's currently nominated, !Ole!

[E] The Lord of the. Rings: The Two Towers

Why It's Here Entertainment doesn't come any bigger, any better-crafted, or with any better pedigree, so it's no surprise that Peter Jackson's trilogy in progress again racked up nominations for Best Picture and most of its craftspeople crafts·people

Why We Care Out actor Ian McKellen as Gandalf remains our favorite fantasy wandsman, but he disappears from Towers for half the film. So we turn our attention to the digitally created villain Gollum, a walking, talking lock for the special-effects Oscar. We caught hell for saying so awhile back, but now that we've seen him in the computer-generated flesh, we're even more convinced that Gollum is family: He's a lisping bachelor who's obsessed ob·sess

Adaptation

Why It's Here With a previous Oscar winner (Nicolas Cage) portraying a previous nominee (Being John Malkovich screenwriter Charlie Kaufman), it was inevitable that the film industry would dislocate dis·lo·cate
v.
To displace a body part, especially to displace a bone from its normal position.
its own shoulder to pat itself on the back for this smug, insidery movie about ... the making of this smug, insidery movie.

Why We Care There's nothing straighter than a Charlie Kaufman movie, since they're usually about Charlie Kaufman in some way, but C.K.'s Adaptation nomination is shared with his late brother, Donald. We have on the highest authority that Donald was in a long-term committed relationship with out Hollywood director Alan Smithee at the time of his death, so we wish Donald and Charlie the best. RIP.

The Pianist

Why It's Here Roman Polanski's powerful World War II drama scored seven nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor (Adrien Brody).

Why We Care No pink triangles in this one, but we still love nominated screenwriter Ronald Harwood for creating the very gay title character in The Dresser.

Lilo 1. (operating system) lilo - Linux Loader.
2. lilo - first-in first-out.
 & Stitch

Why It's Here One of Disney's two strong contenders for Best Animated Feature (alongside Spirited Away), this charming movie hits all the notes from hilarious to poignant while telling its story about how the families we create for ourselves can be as strong as the ones we're given.

Why We Care Academy rules allow only one person to be named for each film in this category (Chris Sanders, in this case), but openly gay codirector Dean DeBlois is just as responsible for creating this gem. We suspect he might have suggested the alien in drag (voiced by Kevin McDonald of The Kids in the Hall, no less) as well.

Y Tu Mama Tambien

Why It's Here Another Spanish-language film shut out of the Best Foreign Film category, this hilarious, sexy tale of two boys and a woman on a journey both literal and spiritual captured the fancy of gay and straight audiences alike. Alfonso Cuaron and his brother Carlos are nominated for Best Original Screenplay.

Why We Care A year or so later, that climactic boy-boy kiss still gives us goose bumps goose bumps or goose pimples: see gooseflesh. .

Zus & Zo

Why It's Here This Dutch comedy, nominated for Best Foreign Film, deals with three sisters and the conflicts that arise when their gay brother suddenly announces he's engaged to marry a beautiful woman.

Why We Care We want to see any movie that has a gay TV chef named Felix Delicious, and we especially hope this foreign comedy gets a national release before the inevitable half-assed American remake gets produced.

8 Mile

Why It's Here Eminem's "Lose Yourself" snagged a Best Original Song nomination, marking the first time a hip-hop song has been honored in this category.

Why We Care We love the idea of Eminem at the Oscars surrounded by the gay mafia of Haynes, Almodovar, Marshall, Rudin, and the like, but he'll no doubt be cowering cow·er

Still, if he doesn't want to get onstage and perform his song during the show, maybe the Academy can get Ann Reinking to fill in.
