Ms. DeGeneres's portrayal of a spunky spunk·y adj. spunk·i·er, spunk·i·est Informal Spirited; plucky. spunk i·ly adv. blue tang with memory issues was one of the key factors in this cartoon's success. The Last Samurai Why it's here: Despite its big prestige-picture push, this honky-goes-Japanese epic snagged just four nominations, including one for Ken Watanabe's movie-stealing supporting performance. Why we care: We don't. If only they'd focused on the real love story in this movie--between Watanabe and Tom Cruise--and not shoehorned that woman between them. And must movies about foreign cultures always star white folks? Lost in Translation Why it's here: This movie about white people adrift in a foreign culture earned four nominations in key categories, although Scarlett Johansson got stiffed. Why we care: Congratulations to Sofia Coppola for finally, in the awards' 76th go-round, becoming the first American woman to be nominated in the Best Director category. Can the first American lesbian director nominee be far behind? House of Sand and Fog Why it's here: This haunting and really, really sad drama is up for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress (the supremely powerful Ben Kingsley and Shohreh Aghdashloo, respectively) as well as Best Score. Why we care: A dysfunctional married couple squares off with a depressed woman and her codependent married lover over real estate. And they say we're a threat to marriage. In America Why it's here: This fiercely-loved-by-some tale of an immigrant family in New York New York, state, United States New York, Middle Atlantic state of the United States. It is bordered by Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and the Atlantic Ocean (E), New Jersey and Pennsylvania (S), Lakes Erie and Ontario and the Canadian province of scored a hat trick of three nominations. Why we care: Best Supporting Actor nominee Djimon Hour, sou is one of the healthiest dying men we've ever seen. He's got AIDS the way All MacGraw had leukemia in Love Story. American Splendor Why it's here: Probably the most robbed-by-Oscar movie of 2003, Splendor at least scored a well-deserved Best Adapted Screenplay nomination for its unique recounting of the life of comics writer Harvey Pekar. Why we care: Pekar's pal Toby Radloff, who appears in the film as himself, is openly gay. And the proudest nerd you'll ever see. Capturing the Friedmans Why it's here: Andrew Jarecki's controversial and much-talked-about portrait of a family torn apart by charges of pedophilia pedophilia, psychosexual disorder in which there is a preference for sexual activity with prepubertal children. Pedophiles are almost always males. The children are more often of the opposite sex (about twice as often) and are typically 13 years or age or younger; is a front-runner for Best Documentary. Why we care: Late in the film, we discover that the paterfamilias has a gay brother. Pieces of April Why it's here: Patricia Clarkson finally, finally, gets a Best Supporting Actress nod for her turn as a mom who doesn't let her cancer diagnosis keep her from being hilariously bitter. Why we care: If you haven't already pledged your undying love to Clarkson for her turns as a lesbian heroin addict in Lisa Cholodenke's High Art or as a suburban bigot bigot - A person who is religiously attached to a particular computer, language, operating system, editor, or other tool (see religious issues).
