Gay bishop is Episcopalian first.


I plan to be a good bishop, not a gay bishop," said the Reverend V. Gene Robinson The Right Reverend Vicki Gene Robinson (born (May 29 1947 (1947--) (age 60)) is the ninth bishop of the Diocese of New Hampshire in the Episcopal Church in the United States of America . , whose June 7 election in New Hampshire New Hampshire, one of the New England states of the NE United States. It is bordered by Massachusetts (S), Vermont, with the Connecticut R. forming the boundary (W), the Canadian province of Quebec (NW), and Maine and a short strip of the Atlantic Ocean (E).  as the first openly gay Episcopalian bishop has further inflamed a global controversy that threatens to divide the 77 million-member Anglican Church.

Robinson, 56, who lives with his partner, Mark Andrew, must still win confirmation at the church's national general convention in Minneapolis, starting in late July. Many church conservatives are vowing opposition.

The Anglican Church, which deems gay sex "incompatible with scripture," has in recent months become deeply divided over the issue of homosexuality. Robinson's appointment--along with the election of openly gay canon Jeffrey John The Very Revd Dr Jeffrey Philip Hywel John, SCP, (born 10 February 1953) is a Church of England cleric, and the current Dean of St Albans. He made headlines in 2003 when he was the first person to have openly been in a sexually active gay relationship to be nominated to be a Church  as a bishop in the Church of England Church of England: see England, Church of.  and a same-sex blessing approved by a Canadian Anglican diocese on May 28--have conservative Anglican churches around the world threatening to secede.
