How do you reconcile the celebratory attitude toward sex in the film with the arrival of AIDS?

AIDS did not spontaneously occur because of people enjoying themselves sexually. There was a sexually transmitted virus we didn't know about, and we were not using condoms. There will be a condom campaign with the release of this film.

How would you describe the narrators in the film?

It's nice that the story is being told by men of a certain age. They don't have to be afraid to talk about what's true. And these guys are funny, Those of us who survived are very lucky. It's a biological joke. My friends who died didn't do anything sexually that I didn't do. As James Baldwin said, there is a responsibility to be a witness.

What would you say to the post-AIDS generations?

I have been with my partner 29 years, and we have a wonderful and difficult relationship. But we didn't have to worry about what we had we missed. After a film festival screening, a 37-year-old guy said to us, "1 never knew that you could think of sex without fear."
