Gay, straight, Consolidated.

Frat boys love the big sound of Mountain Consolidated, but the band's DJ and keyboardist aren't afraid to be out

Categorizing the music of Mountain Consolidated, which mixes the beats and samples of DJ Erik Blood with Ben Erickson's organ and Swede's slide and pedal steel guitars The pedal steel guitar is a type of electric guitar that uses a metal slide to stop the strings, rather than fingers on strings as with a conventional guitar. The pedal steel is placed horizontally on a stand, with the strings facing up towards the player, and is typically plucked , topped with singer Jim Nugent's stream-of-consciousness lyrics lyrics npl [of song] → paroles fpl

, is tricky. "Within the parameters we set up when we started this band, the sky's the limit," explains Nugent, 23.

But so far the Seattle sextet (rounded out by bassist-engineer Pierre Ferguson and drummer Mike Watt This article is about the bassist. For the ice hockey player, see Mike Watt (ice hockey).

) hasn't had any trouble making fans with its slippery hybrid of country, hip-hop, and blues, as showcased on its debut album The MC Stands for Revolution (Acid Blues Acid Blues is a new release of music that combines Rock, Soul, Funk, Jazz and Blues rock. Acid Blues Rock is believed to be founded in Seattle, Washington directly into the 21st century and lives through many's past music, mainly Blues Rock and Acid Jazz artists such as Jimi ).

diversity "keeps our audience a little broader. For some reason--maybe the big beats--we appeal to a mainstream, straight male audience," admits the 24-year-old organist. The group has also done well at shows aimed at the under-21 set. One wonders if those fans would respond differently if they realized both Erickson and Blood are openly gay.

Sometimes this creates a bit of a conundrum conundrum A problem with no satisfactory solution; a dilemma , like at a recent CD signing, where "about 20 very petite teenage girls were asking things like `Would you sign my arm?'" says Erickson. But he isn't discouraged by this part of the band's fan base. "Where there are teenage girls, there are gay boys," he notes. "That's certainly held true for Britney Spears and the Backstreet backstreet

 Boys."

That said, playing in a popular rock group still isn't necessarily conducive to scoring dates. "I meet lots of really cute guys who only want to talk to me about my turntables and my sampler--and they want their girlfriends to hear everything about it too," says Blood, Luckily, the 23-year-old is coming up on his third anniversary with the guitarist in another Seattle outfit.

Blood, who grew up in Tacoma, Wash., and Erickson, a native of Missoula, Mont., both came out in their teens. Although neither is bucking to be the new gay pride poster boy, growing up in nonurban environs influenced their attitudes. "When roles traditionally played by straight folks are being played by gay folks, it's tremendously important for that to be seen," concludes Erickson, "Because it happens a lot, especially in rock and roll, and people don't realize that."
