Gasoline pump prices continue to vrooom.

L.A. COUNTY - Higher crude oil prices, the higher cost of making the state-mandated, cleaner-burning gasoline gasoline or petrol, light, volatile mixture of hydrocarbons for use in the internal-combustion engine and as an organic solvent, obtained primarily by fractional distillation and "cracking" of petroleum, but also obtained from natural gas, by  and refinery shutdowns in Northern and Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. The average price went from $1.18.1 a gallon on Feb. 9 to $1.32.7 on April 12, according to CPC (1) (Central Processing Complex) An IBM mainframe that has two or more central processors (CPs) that share memory. It is the collection of processors, memory and I/O subsystems manufactured with a single serial number, typically all contained in one cabinet. .

Meanwhile, the price of diesel gasoline, used by trucks, spiked nearly 22.7 cents a gallon in a three-week period between the end of March and the beginning of April, according to CPC. It went from $1.26.7 a gallon on March 22 to $1.49.4 on April 12, according to CPC.

Consumers should "expect higher prices on the shelves," said Maureen Heagney, spokeswoman for the California Trucking Association, the state trade group representing the trucking industry.

Truckers, which have been operating on thin profit margins of 2 percent, have seen operating costs operating costs nplgastos mpl operacionales  rise by 3 to 5 percent as a result of higher diesel prices, she said. They have passed the higher costs on to their customers - which will likely causes price increases in trucked goods, Heagney said.

In a statement released in early April, Joel D. Anderson, executive vice president of the trucking association, said the new cleaner-burning gas in California may be partly to blame for the higher diesel prices.

For the last few years, truckers have been using a cleaner-burning diesel which was mandated by the California Air Resources Board California Air Resources Board (CARB) is the "clean air agency" of the state of California in the United States. Established originally in 1967, it is a part of the California Environmental Protection Agency, an organization which reports directly to the California . For the last few months, refiners in California have been required to produce a cleaner-burning gasoline for automobiles.

Rises top national pace

"Since there is only a limited number of suppliers of this type of fuel," price increases in California are higher than those nationwide, Anderson said.

Allan Hirsch, spokesman for the California Air Resources Board, said the new gasoline was only a secondary factor driving prices higher.

Last week the vast majority of gas stations in California were pumping the new, cleaner-burning gasoline for automobiles which is supposed to reduce smog-causing tailpipe tail·pipe

emissions by 15 percent. Gasoline refineries were required to begin manufacturing the gas on March 1.

CARB has estimated the new fuel costs between 5 and 15 cents more a gallon to produce, Hirsch said.

But he said CARB believes the new gas is only responsible for about 5 to 9 cents of the 17-cent increase in recent months.

Hirsch noted gas prices have rocketed up all over the nation in recent months.

According to CPC, gas prices increased 8.7 cents nationwide to $1.22.5 a gallon between Feb. 9 and April 12.

The Wall Street Journal reported April 4 that gas prices nationwide have hit a 12-year high, due to higher crude oil prices, low inventories and a cold winter nationally which increases the use of oil for heating.

Ranked No. 4 in price

But according to CPC, California on April 12 had the fourth highest average price for a gallon of regular unleaded of the 50 states. Oregon, Hawaii and Connecticut were the only states with higher gas prices.

Hirsch noted one factor that may be driving unleaded and diesel fuel prices up in California is the fact that major refineries in the state have had to shut down in recent months.

The Atlantic Richfield Co. refinery in Carson was "down for a couple of days" in late March due to a problem with the hydrogen unit, said Scott Loll, Arco spokesman. But he said problems at the facility are not to blame for higher gas prices.

The worldwide price of a barrel of oil has risen from about $17 a barrel to $22 in the last six months, he noted.

In addition, the Shell Oil Co. refinery in Martinez, Calif., one of the major suppliers of gasoline in Northern California Northern California, sometimes referred to as NorCal, is the northern portion of the U.S. state of California. The region contains the San Francisco Bay Area, the state capital, Sacramento; as well as the substantial natural beauty of the redwood forests, the northern , has been producing gasoline "on a modified basis" since April 1 when an explosion and fire ripped through that plant, said Tomi Van de Brooke, refinery spokeswoman.

She declined to comment on whether problems at the refinery were partly to blame for higher gas prices, saying it is company policy not to comment on gas prices.

"In the 11 years I have been in the market, I have never seen gas prices move up faster," he said. "There is no swimming against this tide."
