Gas pipe project crosses wetlands; Tennessee Gas outlines plans.

Byline: Lynne Klaft

LUNENBURG - Tennessee Gas' 5.1 mile replacement-pipe project will cross 24 wetland sites and nine roadways in town, a project official said this week.

"The project will start on Lancaster Avenue, where there is an existing valve site, cross 24 wetlands, and have a temporary impact on 7.7 acres, with no loss of wetlands," said John M. Zimmer of ENSR ENSR European Network for SME Research  environmental consulting Environmental consulting is often a form of compliance consulting, in which the consultant ensures that the client maintains an appropriate measure of compliance with environmental regulations.  of Cape Cod Cape Cod, narrow peninsula of glacial origin, 399 sq mi (1,033 sq km), SE Mass., extending 65 mi (105 km) E and N into the Atlantic Ocean. It is generally flat, with sand dunes, low hills, and numerous lakes. , an environmental consultant for Tennessee Gas. He made his remarks to the Conservation Commission Wednesday night.

The company will restore all disturbed wetlands after the pipe has been laid, Mr. Zimmer said.

The company has a 20- to 30-foot permanent easement easement, in law, the right to use the land of another for a specified purpose, as distinguished from the right to possess that land. If the easement benefits the holder personally and is not associated with any land he owns, it is an easement in gross (e.g.  throughout the 5-mile project and is negotiating with abutting property owners to use a 75- to 100-foot-wide workspace for equipment and traffic.

In most areas, the company will dig up the existing 6-inch pipe, remove it and replace it with 12-inch pipe in the same trench with at least 3 feet of soil cover.

Mr. Zimmer said the roads involved - Lancaster Avenue, Kilburn Street, Cross Street, Prospect Street, Elm Street, Hollis Road, West Street, Electric Avenue and Pleasant Street - will not be disturbed because the company will drill laterally underneath them.

The project will start on Lancaster Avenue in late spring or early summer 2009 and will end on Pleasant Street, with a tentative completion date of Oct. 1, 2009.

The company plans to switch off the gas on the entire 5 miles of pipe and to vent and clean the pipes before construction starts.

"Gas will be provided by LNG LNG (liquefied natural gas): see under natural gas.  while service is out," said Mr. Zimmer, explaining that tanker trucks will deliver liquid natural gas to existing tanks.

Construction workers and engineering staff will not be allowed on the project site if they have not completed safety and environmental training, according to according to

The trench that will be excavated will be 3- to 4-feet wide. The new pipe will be coated with epoxy epoxy

The 40-foot sections of pipe will be welded together, and up to half a mile of pipe will be laid at one time.

"It's a well-orchestrated operation," said Mr. Zimmer, explaining that different crews will be constantly preparing, digging, laying pipe, and replacing soil and turf on an "assembly line" basis.

. Marro, has walked the site with Tennessee Gas officials, and he submitted a report to the Conservation Commission earlier this week.

Mr. Marro said in the report that he was happy with the erosion inspection program proposed by Tennessee Gas, but noted that the project would come close to an endangered species endangered species, any plant or animal species whose ability to survive and reproduce has been jeopardized by human activities. In 1999 the U.S. government, in accordance with the U.S.  habitat in one area and would have to cross a pond in another.

He asked the commission to allow the company more time to look into the possibility of horizontal drilling to install a pipe under the pond, and recommended that natural re-growth be allowed and seed mix be used only if needed.

"I would rather see current species re-establish itself as opposed to any new ones a seed mix could bring. The replication conditions should also include monitoring and management of invasive species

The commission continued the public hearing to May 21.
