Garlock Bearings completes 21,000 square foot expansion.CHARLOTTE, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 14, 1997--Garlock Bearings, a division of Coltec Industries (NYSE NYSE See: New York Stock Exchange :COT), has completed a 21,000 square foot building near its primary manufacturing facility in Thorofare, N.J. The new plant was constructed to accommodate rising demand for the division's self-lubricating bearings. Production of the division's filament-wound, self-lubricating bearings, which are marketed under the GarMax(R) and GarFil(R) names, was moved to the new facility from the division's primary factory, also in Thorofare. Joe Fults, vice president of marketing for Garlock Bearings, said, "The demand for these products continues to grow. Design engineers have become increasingly aware of the benefits of these products, including corrosion resistance, low cost, ability to function in a dirty environment and self lubrication lubrication, introduction of a substance between the contact surfaces of moving parts to reduce friction and to dissipate heat. A lubricant may be oil, grease, graphite, or any substance—gas, liquid, semisolid, or solid—that permits free action of ." GarMax(R) bearings comprise a rugged surface of Teflon(R) fibers twisted with Dacron(R), and a high-strength fiber backing for stability. The Teflon(R) acts as a solid lubricant Lubricant A gas, liquid, or solid used to prevent contact of parts in relative motion, and thereby reduce friction and wear. In many machines, cooling by the lubricant is equally important. . GarFil(R) bearings have a bearing surface of filled Teflon(R) tape, eliminating the need for traditional external lubricants lubricants preparations for the lubrication of passages to reduce frictional injury, e.g. oily preparations, including petroleum jelly, lanolin or water-soluble preparations such as methyl cellulose. . These filament-wound bearings are used in a variety of heavy-duty applications, including agricultural and construction equipment. The addition of this building, Garlock Bearings' third expansion since 1991, increases total square footage to 128,000 square feet.
