Gardner honored its own; Memorial Day 2008.

GARDNER - Memorial Day, a day to remember veterans who have died in the service of their country, will be observed tomorrow with a parade starting at 8:30 a.m. at Polish Square. The event brings back memories of the 90 Gardner residents who died for their country during World War II, as well as in the nation's other wars.

It also brings back memories of a special day in 1946 when the city honored its returning World War II veterans.

The Saturday parade, shown above, took place on the second day of the celebration, Aug. 17.

the book, "Gardner In World War II," nearly 20,000 people witnessed the parade.

Approximately 700 veterans marched, which represented only part of the 2,700 from Gardner that entered the service during the war, but more than had been anticipated prior to the parade.

The Army, Navy, Coast Guard, and Marine Corps were all represented. City Hall, which is still in use today, can be seen in the background as the troops march down Pleasant Street. The names of the 90 men who lost their lives in World War II can be found on a memorial marker marker /mark·er/ (mahrk´er) something that identifies or that is used to identify.
