Gardai get 'dirty bomb' protection; EXCLUSIVE.

Byline: by DARREN BOYLE

GARDAI are being kitted out to protect themselves in the event of a terrorist "dirty bomb" attack.

Garda Commissioner Noel Conroy has invited manufacturers of CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear) suits to supply 270 for his officers.

Security expert Declan Power said CBRN kits were a necessity of modern policing.

He added: "The world has changed and terrorists are willing to use chemical, biological and nuclear threats."

The 270 suits are to be delivered to Garda Central Stores on the Shanownen Road in Santry, Dublin.

There is a possibility a further 200 may be needed over the next 12 months.

Each suit will have a base layer consisting of "under vest with long johns".

A second layer will have "gas tight seals" for wrists and ankles as well as a hood with face seal. The weather-proof outer layer must offer protection against liquid and gaseous chemicals.

Outfits also have a "rehydration system" that works along with the gas mask.
