Basing her actions on a novel she had read years earlier, Emma dressed as a man and, in this disguise, became a successful traveling bookseller, a common occupation at the time. Caught up in the volunteering fervor at the beginning of the Civil War, Emma enlisted in a Michigan regiment in the spring of 1861. She volunteered to care for the wounded, served as a mail carrier, and worked in the hospitals, always avoiding having to use her weapon. After the war, Emma wrote a book, Nurse and Spy, in which she claimed that she had been a spy as well as a soldier. That she was a spy is doubtful, but she was eventually officially recognized as having been a soldier and she received the government pension that was her due. Gansler does an admirable job of supplying the panorama of the Civil War, its generals and its campaigns, as a background to Emma's role as a soldier. This book is highly recommended.
