Caltech might not pose much of a threat in the world of intercollegiate in·ter·col·le·giate  
adj.
Involving or representing two or more colleges.

Adj. 1. intercollegiate - used of competition between colleges or universities; "intercollegiate basketball"
 athletics, but may heaven protect any chess team that stands in its way.

After deciding only this year to form a team, Caltech won the U.S. Amateur Team Chess Championship on March 23, warming up by beating the MIT MIT - Massachusetts Institute of Technology  chess team in earlier play. Both tournaments took place over the Internet.

To win the amateur championship, Caltech eliminated a team from Carleton College Carleton College

Private liberal arts college in Northfield, Minn., founded in 1866. It offers a variety of undergraduate majors. Small classes and opportunities to participate in faculty research projects attract a select student body, most from out of state.

The university was originally started as a research arm of Texas Instruments as the Graduate Research Center of the Southwest in 1961. The institute (by then renamed the Southwest Center for Advanced Studies) which at the time was located at Southern Methodist
 in the finals.

To top it off, the Caltech team didn't even field its best players.

The amateur championships are only open to players rated below the master level. Caltech was forced to bench its top four players, including Hummel, who is just 18 and has not yet even declared a major.
