Dr. Sherwood retired on April 1, 2002 as Senior Vice President for Medical and Scientific Affairs in the U.S. Human Health Division of Merck & Co. and currently serves as Adjunct Professor of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania (body, education) University of Pennsylvania - The home of ENIAC and Machiavelli.

During the last decade, as Merck's Chief Medical Officer in the United States, Dr. Sherwood was responsible for all medical activities in the U.S. market. At Merck, he previously served as Executive Vice-President for Worldwide Development in the Merck Research Laboratories and Senior Vice-President in the International Division.

Prior to joining Merck, he served for seven years as Baumritter Professor and Chairman of the Department of Medicine, Albert Einstein College of Medicine and as Physician-in-Chief at Montefiore Medical Center Montefiore Medical Center, in the Bronx, New York, is the university hospital of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
