The space was designed by noted architect Hellmuth, Obata & Kassabaum; the engineering firm is Meyer, Strong & Jones.

"This is an extremely exciting assignment for one of the most famous women's fashion retailers in the country," says Mark Varian, president of John Gallin & Son, Inc. "It's a large, multi-faceted interiors project that requires a deep analysis and understanding of our client's unique culture and goals.

"For example, the company wanted to maximize the number of good views for its employees--not only for those with offices, but also those with cubicles cubicles

In addition, notes Mr. Varian, Ann Taylor insisted that the Gallin firm pay special heed to the large percentage of its female employees, which reflects its status as a major leader in women's fashions.

"The client wanted us to hire, as subcontractors, as many women-owned business enterprises (WBE's) as was feasible," says Mr. Varian. "As it turned out, using so many WBE's will not only help Ann Taylor achieve its social goals, but it will also result in a less expensive project--and one with no loss in quality whatsoever."

Ann Taylor has been a client of the Gallin firm for six years.

"It's one thing to have a long-term satisfied client," says Mr. Varian. "But to be awarded an important assignment for its new headquarters is especially gratifying grat·i·fy

The John Gallin & Son team for the Ann Taylor project consists of principal Chris Gallin, Vice President Robert Kondracki (the project manager), and Chief Estimator Jamie Cassera.

"In addition to this core team, The Gallin principal team takes an active role in all aspects of the project," notes Mr. Varian. Besides himself, that team includes Michael Gallin, the firm's vice president of production, and Thomas Gallin, the firm's chief financial officer.
