Galeano insults Cubans. (Letters to the Editor).

As a Cuban American A Cuban American is a United States citizen who traces his or her ancestry to Cuba. Many communities throughout the United States have significant Cuban American populations.  living in the United States for more than forty years, and having recently visited Cuba twice, I find Eduardo Galeano's article ("Cuba Hurts," June issue) an insult to Cubans who live in Cuba Live in Cuba is the first live DVD of the American hard rock band Audioslave, containing footage of the free concert that the band performed in Cuba in front of over 70,000 people.  and to the ones who live outside Cuba.

How can he compare the execution of 152 criminals in Texas to the recent execution of three Cubans? Those 152 people were murderers: They killed and raped people. They got a trial and were in jail for years before they where executed.

The three young Cubans who were executed didn't hurt anybody. Yes, they hijacked a boat to look for freedom, but that was their only crime. They got a twenty-four-hour trial, and the next day they were executed. How can Galeano compare that to capital punishment in the United States Capital Punishment in the United States is officially sanctioned by 38 of the 50 states, as well as by the federal government and the military. The overwhelming majority of executions are performed by the states; the federal government maintains the legal power to use capital , where the prisoners get a trial and a chance to appeal?

He said that the problem in Cuba needs to be resolved by the Cubans. How? The ones who live outside Cuba can't do anything against the regime. And the ones who are inside can't even write their opinions in books or newspapers because they are put in jail.

I am a Cuban American--born and raised in Cuba--and I'm thirty-eight years old. I love to read pieces by people who think they know what they are talking about, but in reality have no idea. Galeano's piece was one of those.

I hope you hear from many other Cuban Americans complaining about the ridiculousness of Galeano and his conflicting and contradictory thoughts. I am for peace, but I am also for many things Galeano spoke against--like helping a repressed re·pressed
