Management System The leadership and control within an organization. It is made up of people interacting with other people and machines that, together, set the goals and objectives, outline the strategies and tactics, and develop the plans, schedules and necessary controls to run an organization.

, its Web-based Material Safety Data Sheet management system. GZA's is the only fully Web-based software package for automated tracking and management of MSDS records and chemical information. To arrange for an on-line demonstration of the system, interested readers are invited to visit GZA's Web site at www.gzaisd.net.

Under federal Hazard Communication regulations, employers must make data sheets available for all workplace materials that may contain hazardous chemicals. To date, over 16 million such substances have been registered. MSDSs must be readily available to all employees and, because they are legally part of workers' medical records, they must be maintained for at least 30 years. Additionally, employers must log and track workplace chemicals "cradle-to-grave," and provide regular reports to state and federal worker-safety agencies on current inventory levels, locations, and other usage details.

Until a few years ago, almost all companies met Employee Right-to-Know standards by maintaining large binders of printed data sheets throughout their facilities, a cumbersome system that was both labor-intensive and unreliable. Recently, many software developers and distributors have set their sights on this potentially lucrative market. According to a recent survey by Donley Technology, the premier publisher serving the environmental software industry, nearly 70 MSDS management systems are now being marketed.

GZA's MSDS Management System, first introduced in 1996, was the first and is still the only automation system designed "from the ground up" to be fully Web-deployable. Its user-friendly Web technology means that all employees, even in a large, multi-location organization, can have quick, accurate access to this important safety information with the point-and-click simplicity of an Internet browser, regardless of platform or hardware. The customizable program handles MSDS records of any length and lets users conduct searches and generate a wide range of detailed reports and analyses with a few keystrokes.

Version 2.07, which will be released April 10, includes several new features to enhance the system's functionality while further reducing data management and compliance costs. The new features include enhanced search categories, an MSDS archiving utility, an expanded chemical database, and reports showing chemical/product use by department or facility.

GZA's MSDS Management System is offered in both single-user and enterprise-wide configurations, thereby making it affordable to small and mid-sized companies as well as large industrial organizations. Current customers include, among others, Bose Corporation, Aavid Thermal Technologies, Triumvirate First Triumvirate was the alliance of Julius Caesar, Pompey, and Marcus Licinius Crassus formed in 60 B.C. This was not strictly a triumvirate, since the alliance had no official sanction. The three men were able to control Rome, and the alliance aided Caesar's rise to power by giving him the opportunity to pursue the Gallic Wars. Environmental, Inc., and Aviall Inc, the world's largest independent distributor of aviation parts.

"Our strategy is to offer customers all the benefits of Internet technology, which can include both dramatic cost savings and greatly enhanced capabilities," said Mark D. Bucknam, Director of GZA Information Systems Division. "Many companies are still paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to deploy and maintain comparable systems based on conventional client-server platforms. With Internet technology now so well-proven and secure, that kind of cost is no longer justified."
