Grant from the National Institute on Aging The National Institute on Aging is a division of the U.S. National Institutes of Health, located in Bethesda, Maryland.

Formed in 1974, NIA's mission is to improve the health and well-being of older Americans through research. It is the primary U.S.
, a division of the National Institutes of Health. The grant will assist GW Medical to further develop, refine and commercialize its new LymPro Test([R]), a blood diagnostic test for early detection of Alzheimer's disease Alzheimer's disease (ăls`hī'mərz, ôls–), degenerative disease of nerve cells in the cerebral cortex that leads to atrophy of the brain and senile dementia.  (AD).

To accomplish this task, GW Medical Technologies has assembled a world-class team for their Phase II study effort. "We are very excited about the collaborative relationships we are structuring for this study. Thus far, we have two renowned Alzheimer's disease research organizations - Sun Health Research Institute and Pivotal Research Centers -- that will be assisting us in our patient recruitment efforts," says William Gartner, GW Medical's CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. According to Dr. Joseph Rogers, Ph.D., president and senior scientist at Sun Health Research Institute, "The potential behind an early Alzheimer's disease diagnostic would be life changing for those individuals and families affected by this disease. As such, we are very excited about being part of the collaborative effort in advancing GW Medical's LymPro Test as a potential adjunctive AD diagnostic tool for clinicians."

Dr. Louis Kirby, M.D., medical director for Pivotal Research Centers, agrees; "Pivotal Research is pleased to be part of the study team in assisting GW Medical in their Phase II clinical trials. A new test to diagnose Alzheimer's disease earlier, such as their LymPro Test, could lead to expedited therapeutic intervention and an improved quality of life for those individuals affected by AD."

"We are very much looking forward to beginning this study effort," says Dr. Prakash Rao, GW Medical vice president, chief science officer and principal investigator for this study. "Over 225 subjects will be recruited from a broad-based population mix of AD, non-AD and cognitively intact cohorts. Upon successful completion of this pivotal study effort, we fully anticipate being able to introduce our LymPro Test to the public as the first blood diagnostic test in the market to help physicians in their efforts in expediting the diagnosis of this devastating dev·as·tate
