Nor will Jay Delsing, whose act of kindness more than two decades ago has come full circle, restoring his golf game and confidence in the process. Gunn and Delsing were UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles UCLA University Center for Learning Assistance (Illinois State University) UCLA University of Carrollton, TX and Lower Addison, TX teammates at the opposite ends of the talent spectrum during the early 1980s, when coach Eddie Merrins' Bruins - building momentum for what would become the school's only NCAA NCAA abbr. National Collegiate Athletic Association golf championship in 1988 - fielded four eventual PGA Tour The PGA Tour is an organization that operates the USA's main professional golf tours. It is headquartered in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, USA. Its name is officially rendered in all caps as “PGA TOUR". players. Delsing was one of the first, a two-time All-America who played on the 1980 nationally ranked UCLA team, along with eventual U.S. Open The term U.S. Open is applied to "open" United States national championships in a particular sport, in which anybody, amateur or professional, American or non-American may compete. These include:
All were teammates of Gunn during his lesser-distinguished years with the Bruins, years Delsing helped make memorable just by being considerate when Gunn arrived in Westwood. ``I was there in 1980, and I was the last man on a 22-man team,'' Gunn said. ``He was a first-team All-American on the No. 1-ranked team in the country. And he was very inspirational to me, very supportive. And as I got better, he always gave me the encouragement to keep going.'' Fast forward more than 20 years. Agoura Hills resident Gunn, a teaching professional at Tierra Rejada Golf Club in Moorpark, has been recognized as the Southern California PGA (1) (Professional Graphics Adapter) An early IBM PC display standard for 3D processing with 640x480x256 resolution. It was not widely used. (2) (Programmable Gate Array) See gate array and FPGA. Section's Teacher of the Year for 2001. Delsing has earned veteran exempt status and more than $2 million as a 19-year PGA Tour player. But Delsing, at age 41, has hit the low point of his career. He had lost his swing, his desire to play and most of the fun he had been able to derive for so long from this difficult game. Five consecutive missed cuts, accompanied by numbers only a weatherman could love - eight of 10 consecutive playing days in the mid- to high-70s - left him convinced of the need for coaching help. Fellow touring pro Peter Jacobsen recommended Houston, Texas, instructor Jim Hardy, a teacher Jacobsen had been high on for years. Delsing tried, but Hardy was overloaded with clients. ``He told me, `You need to see my No. 1 protege, Roger Gunn of California,' '' said Delsing, who admitted to mixed emotions at the news. ``I was disappointed I didn't get to see Jim, but I thought it would help me to rekindle re·kin·dle tr.v. re·kin·dled, re·kin·dling, re·kin·dles 1. To relight (a fire). 2. To revive or renew: rekindled an old interest in the sciences. an old friendship.'' He wound up with a lot more than that. Since Delsing phoned Gunn during a drive to a Buy.com Tour event in Arkansas in late July, he has made the cut in five of six starts, highlighted by a 21-under-par effort in winning the Buy.com Tour's Omaha Classic. That breakthrough effort - only his second victory as a pro - vaulted him to No. 13 in season earnings on the Buy.com Tour, where the top 15 money winners earn full playing privileges for a year on the PGA Tour. The confidence restored by his victory at Omaha and the rediscovered swing has helped Delsing make the cut in both PGA Tour events he has entered since re-connecting with Gunn. ``I feel like Roger helped me get this thing back,'' Delsing said last weekend in British Columbia, where he tied for 53rd in the PGA Tour's Air Canada Championship The Air Canada Championship was a golf tournament on the PGA Tour from 1996 to 2002. It was played at the Northview Golf & Country Club (Ridge Course) in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada. It was founded in 1996 as the Greater Vancouver Open. . Four weeks earlier, the week before his victory at Omaha, a second-round 64 made him an early weekend title contender in the PGA Tour's John Deere Classic The John Deere Classic is an American professional golf event which is on the PGA Tour schedule. It is played annually in July, the week before the British Open Championship, at the TPC at Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois. . Delsing faded to 61st with a 74-72 finish but could see the progress in his swing. A mailed exchange of videotapes with Gunn the next week at Omaha pushed him into the winner's circle and got him excited about his game again. Delsing, who returns to California this month to play in the Buy.com Tour's State Farm Open at Empire Lakes GC in Rancho Cucamonga, gives Gunn full credit for the career boost that has him on the verge On the Verge (or The Geography of Yearning) is a play written by Eric Overmyer. I still feel I have what it takes to compete. I still have that flame, and I'm just so grateful to him. ``I always had immense respect for his dedication, his ability to hang in there. He worked so much harder than I did, and he's a real credit to golf. It's such an irony in how it turned around. I'm going to tell everyone I know about Roger Gunn because I'm really playing well now.'' ``I'm just thankful I was able to repay him,'' said Gunn, who took Delsing's long-ago encouragement and built on it enough to forge a successful career in golf. As for any magical transformation, Gunn said that has more to do with Delsing, who flew Gunn up for a practice session before last week's Air Canada Championship. ``It was like watching something out of `The Twilight Zone,' '' Gunn said. ``There was no way he could turn the ship around so quickly the way he'd hit the skids for a year or so. But the thing about Jay is he's a tremendous athlete (son of 11-year major-league baseball player Jim Delsing of the Yankees, White Sox, St. Louis Browns and Kansas City A's). ``He will do what you tell him immediately.
