The shooting came during ``Thursday Night Drag,'' advertised as a night for anyone willing to pay $20 to compete on an ``eighth-mile street-legal drag strip.'' Spectators paid $10 and could not bring coolers, cans or bottles into the event, which began at 4 p.m. and ended at 10 p.m.

About 2,000 spectators were in the stands Thursday night.

Police detained at least five suspects, but one reportedly jumped a chain-link fence, ran through the parking lot and escaped.

``At 10:08 p.m., we got a shots fired call,'' Benavides said. ``We got there and found one man shot in the grandstand and two more by the restroom.''
