GUNMAN ROBS STUDENTS NEAR CSUN DORMS; CAMPUS POLICE BOOST PATROLS.

Byline: Peter Hartlaub Daily News Staff Writer

California State University, Northridge CSUN offers a variety of programs leading to bachelor's degrees in 61 fields and master's degrees in 42 fields. The university has over 150,000 alumni. It's also home to a summer musical theater/theater program known as TADW (TeenAge Drama Workshop) that leads teenagers through an , campus police were searching Friday for a man they believe robbed two women at gunpoint on consecutive days near

the dormitories, officials said.

The victims were returning to the residence halls when they were confronted Wednesday and Thursday evenings, and neither reported injuries, said CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  spokesman Bruce Erickson.

``It concerns us to the extreme because they were back to back and there was a weapon involved,'' Erickson said.

Campus police are increasing patrols near the dorms and resident advisers are telling students who live there to be more alert, Erickson said. ``We'll have more eyes and ears in the area,'' he said.

CSUN hasn't had an armed robbery since October 1995 - a takeover robbery of an on-campus Taco Bell Taco Bell Corp., a subsidiary of Yum! Brands, Inc., is a Mexican-style quick service restaurant chain based in Irvine, California, United States. The restaurant has locations primarily in the United States and Canada, but also operates outlets in several other markets. , officials said.

The first robbery in the recent round occurred about 7:15 p.m. Wednesday when a robber pulled a handgun and took money and jewelry from a woman near a softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  field about 100 yards south of the residence halls, Erickson said.

Erickson said the money was ``small change'' and didn't know what jewelry was taken or its value.

The second robbery occurred about 5 p.m. Thursday, when a man with a similar description took another woman's ATM card An ATM card (also known as a bank card, client card, or cash card) is an ISO 7810 card issued by a bank, credit union or building society.

and cash at the entrance to the dorms, he said. Exactly how much money was taken was not immediately clear, he said.

``The robber opened the door for her, and when she was in the building, pulled a gun,'' Erickson said.

Erickson said the victims gave identical descriptions of the suspect - an African-American in his 20s, 5-feet-7 and about 180 pounds. He wore dark clothing during the robberies.

Most of the students walking to and from the four-story dorm buildings Friday afternoon had heard about the robberies, but weren't in a panic.

CSUN sophomore Sal Ortiz wasn't too worried. He grew up in South Central Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. , where he was held up at gunpoint more than once, he said.

``I feel like I can walk at night here - more than where I used to live,'' Ortiz said. ``That's one of the reasons I came to school here.''

area of Los Angeles, said she wasn't going to hide in her room either.

``I feel safe in the dorms,'' she said. ``You hear about people stealing bikes, but I don't think there's usually a lot of crime here.''
