GUNMAN HELD AFTER STANDOFF.

A 50-year-old mechanic who barricaded himself in his home after firing at least 10 shots from a high-powered rifle kept authorities at bay for almost five hours before he was taken into custody Tuesday morning.

 at about 11 a.m. after the Sheriff's Department SWAT team threw an explosive diversionary device into the small rundown home at 1535 Valley Drive, authorities said.

 up on him,'' said Lt. Ray Baytos of the sheriff's special enforcement bureau. ``He has mental problems and he continues to struggle.''

The SWAT team found extra ammunition and magazine cartridges inside Colvig's home and Baytos said deputies at the Lost Hills sheriff's station had experienced previous encounters with Colvig.
