Hackett was hit an undetermined number of times and died at the scene. ``It was a frantic scene in this calm community,'' Sheriff's Sgt. Renee Ferguson said. ``Our deputies thought training was going on ... but once they heard glass breaking they realized it was real.'' Robert Chadwick, a technician with the Ventura County Telecommunications Department, was entering the sheriff's compound when the cars in front of him stopped. ``An older man in front of us started to make a U-turn and was waving his hands at us yelling, 'Shots fired!''' Chadwick said. ``All of a sudden, we started hearing rapid fire - a lot of shots - and we got out of there.'' Chadwick, 37, of Oxnard and his colleague then drove up the road leading to the Calleguas Water District building, where they had a bird's-eye view bird's-eye view Noun 1. a view seen from above 2. a general or overall impression of something bird's-eye view n → vista de pájaro of the scene. ``There were detectives running out with their guns drawn,'' Chadwick said. ``There were police on the roof - it was just crazy. Hackett's parents, who live in Newbury Park, declined to talk to reporters. ``We just found out about this,'' a family representative said. ``We're not making any statements to any media.'' Husband and sheriff's spokesman Eric Nishimoto said authorities had not determined a motive, but they weren't ruling out the possibility of police-assisted suicide. ``There is certainly a possibility this was a suicide-by-cop, but we don't know Don't know (DK, DKed) "Don't know the trade." Less than six miles from the shooting, former neighbors were shocked to hear that the quiet, thin man who often rode his 10-speed bike around the neighborhood carried out such a violent act. ``He really kept to himself - it is almost like he didn't even live here,'' said Julie Kocipak, who lived across the street from Hackett for seven years. ``I just can't imagine him doing anything violent.'' Hackett had rented a room in a Fordham Avenue house for more than 10 years, until the owner died a couple months ago, Kocipak said.
