GUNDERSON WINS $130 MILLION IN NEW FREIGHT CAR ORDERS

PORTLAND, Ore., Jan. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- The Greenbrier Companies announced today that its freight car subsidiary, Gunderson Inc., received several large railroad freight car orders last week, totaling over 2,200 units. The railcars include All-Purpose Husky-Stack(R) cars and Maxi-Stack III(R) platforms, 1,252 of which were placed by TTX Co., Chicago. When combined with an order for 530 All-Purpose Husky-Stack cars placed last November by TTX, Gunderson's total 1994 double-stack backlog is 2,782 platforms, worth more than $130 million.
William R. Galbraith, Greenbrier's senior vice president of sales and marketing said, "We are pleased that these customers have recognized Gunderson's quality and delivery capabilities and that they have chosen us for these large orders. In the next two months, we will also deliver 325 new 100-ton boxcars to Kansas City Southern Railway Co. All of these orders will keep Gunderson at maximum production levels into next Fall."
According to Greenbrier President William A. Furman, the All-Purpose Husky-Stack is an entirely new design double-stack car which meets the need for railroads to efficiently handle traffic in lanes where trailers and containers are mixed. Its advantage is that it can carry either trailers or double-stacked containers; whereas, conventional stack cars handle containers only. The Maxi-Stack III is a five-unit articulated car that carries all sizes of containers up to 48 feet in length double-stacked in each of its five wells.
Gunderson has been a leader and innovator in development of the highly efficient double-stack railcars since the mid-1980s, and has built more double-stack platforms than all other freight car builders combined.
Gunderson Inc. is a unit of The Greenbrier Companies, a family of privately held transportation, leasing and management companies headquartered in Lake Oswego, Ore. Gunderson builds most types of new railroad freight cars, including double-stack cars, and refurbishes used freight cars at its 75-acre plant in Portland.
Greenbrier is active in railcar marketing and leasing, leasing intermodal containers and trailers, syndicating and managing equipment-leasing investment programs, and automobile transportation. It owns or manages a fleet of almost 35,000 railcars and intermodal trailers and containers. Other companies in the Greenbrier group include Greenbrier Intermodal, Gunderson Southwest, Greenbrier Capital Corp., Greenbrier Equipment Services and Autostack Corp.
