GUILTY VERDICTS RETURNED AGAINST TWO MEN
 CHARGED WITH NARCOTICS VIOLATIONS
BOSTON, Oct. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- A jury returned guilty verdicts against two men charged with narcotics violations under Title 21 of the United States Code (the Controlled Substances Act) in United States District Court yesterday.
U.S. Attorney A. John Pappalardo announced that the 12-person jury returned guilty verdicts as to both counts of a two-count indictment against Walter Dejesus Zapata, age 25, a Colombian national who was residing in North Providence, R.I. at the time of his arrest and Frederick Fermin Ortiz, age 29, a native of the Dominican Republic who lists his address as Apt. 3, Beacon St., Lawrence, Mass. Both men were charged with Conspiracy to Possess with Intent to Distribute and to Distribute Cocaine in violation of 21 U.S.C. 846 and Aiding and Abetting in the Possession of Cocaine with Intent to Distribute in violation of 21 U.S.C. 841(a)(1) and 18 U.S.C. 2. Charges against a third defendant, William Escobar-Vegara, were dismissed, over the government's objection, by the presiding judge, the Honorable Edward F. Harrington, prior to the submission of the charges to the jury.
Evidence adduced at trial established the involvement of both of the defendants in a conspiracy to distribute 25 kilograms of cocaine. As a result, each man faces a mandatory minimum prison term of 10 years and a maximum sentence of life. Sentencing has been scheduled by Judge Harrington for Dec. 28, 1992.
The case was investigated by Special Agents of the Drug Enforcement Administration's Boston Field Office and Officers of the Lowell, Mass., Vice/Narcotics Unit. Massachusetts State Police Troopers assisted both agencies with the arrests. Assistant U.S. Attorney R. Bradford Bailey of Mr. Pappalardo's Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force handled the prosecution.
