Ladrill Bogan, 33, is accused of murdering Jeremiah McKenney, who died Sept. 20 in a hospital where he was taken by authorities who responded to a call about a child not breathing at a Palmdale Boulevard motel where the family had been staying.

``Obviously, we believe the defendant inflicted the injuries,'' Deputy District Attorney Kelly Cromer said Wednesday.

Bogan pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges of murder and assault on a child causing death. He was being held in lieu of $1 million bail.

Records show Bogan was paroled from prison in 2001 after being convicted of a Gardena residential burglary in 2000. He had been convicted in Norwalk in 1994 of being an accessory after the fact to robbery, records also show.

Deputies said they were called to the Palmdale Motel 6 about 4:30 p.m. Sept. 20 regarding a child who wasn't breathing.

Deputies said they performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), emergency procedure used to treat victims of cardiac and respiratory arrest. The boy was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Barrera said Bogan told investigators that he had taken the child with him to a medical appointment, then to a playground area and then to visit a friend who went with Bogan and the boy to a minimart to buy 7-Up to calm the child's stomach.

When Bogan and the child were about to leave the friend's house, the boy fell from the car seat and hit the metal door frame, Barrera said.

Bogan said he comforted the crying child and then strapped him in, Barrera said.

When they got back to the motel, Bogan and the boy's mother saw the boy's eyes rolling back into his head and called 911, Barrera said.

The mother and her daughter told investigators that Bogan had not committed any prior acts of violence against them, Barrera said.

``Every part ... where witnesses were present is confirmed. None of these individuals have said, `Oh I saw bad behavior on the part of Mr. Bogan.' They are saying just the opposite,'' Barrera said.
