More than 3,000 Harvard and Radcliffe undergraduates are involved in extracurricular arts activities through classes or programs sponsored by the Office for the Arts at Harvard and Radcliffe. The dance program at Radcliffe will participate in the OFA's twenty-fifth anniversary celebration by bringing back a number of graduates for performances in May.

The OFA OFA - Optimal Flexible Architecture  is dedicated to integrating original thinking and expression into the undergraduate educational experience. The OFA program challenges students to think creatively, exercise discipline, take risks, respect excellence, adapt to change, deal with reality, value individuality, collaborate with others, take responsibility, make intelligent choices, test ideas, and interact with the community.

Radcliffe's dance program within the OFA offers extracurricular courses in modern dance, ballet, choreography, tap, and jazz and presents workshops and master classes with visiting artists.

Claire Mallardi has headed the Radcliffe Dance Program since 1964; she was named artistic director of the program and distinguished artist in dance in 1994. The construction of the Harriet Lawrence Hemenway Gymnasium in 1898 reflected the institution's concern with developing sound constitutions along with sound minds. The full-scale dance program Mallardi has created for the Harvard and Radcliffe community evolved from "corrective gymnastics" first offered in 1907.

A dancer, and choreographer as well as a teacher, she has been a member of Donald McKayle's company, performed with Eve Gentry, Jack Moore, and Remy Charlip and studied with Martha Graham, Jose Limon, and Merce Cunningham.

Radcliffe's faculty now includes Elaine Bauer (ballet), Julia Boynton (tap), Tommy Neblett (modern), Jim Viera (modern jazz), Peter Pawlyshyn (ballet), Jimmy Raye (ballet, Pilates therapy), and Elizabeth Lurie (body therapies).

Graduates of Ohio State University's department of dance presented four concerts this year: An evening of repertory dance in October, directed by Jim Cappelletti, featuring six choreographers, including Susan Hadley and members of Pilobolus; a multimedia work created, choreographed, and performed by Tim Glenn in January; a joint concert with Gina Jacobs and Joan Nicholas-Walker, also in January; and a work directed by Angie Hauser inspired by silent film in March.

OSU (Open Source UNIX) Refers to the Unix variants that are maintained as open source, which were primarily BSD Unix and Linux until Sun made its Solaris operating system open source in 2005.  graduates who have become directors of their own companies include Bebe Miller, Senta Driver, Diane McIntyre, and Catherine Turocy.
