GUAVA SIGNS $5.5 MILLION JAPANESE DISTRIBUTION PACT.


Guava guava (gwä`və), small evergreen tree or shrub of the genus Psidium of the family Myrtaceae (myrtle family), native to tropical America and grown elsewhere for its ornamental flowers and edible fruit.  Technologies Inc., Burlingame, Calif., which develops, manufactures and markets innovative cellular analysis systems, has announced a five-year, $5.5 million distribution agreement with Kobe-based Bay Bioscience bioscience /bio·sci·ence/ (-si´ens) the study of biology wherein all the applicable sciences (physics, chemistry, etc.) are applied.

 K.K. to manage the distribution of the Guava Personal Cytometer (Guava PC(tm)) in the Japanese market. In addition, the company closed a $6 million Series D round of funding to facilitate the Japanese expansion.

Bay Bioscience also invested in the company's series D financing. "Our equity investment represents the strength of our endorsement for Guava, its system, and future applications" continued Murayama.

Two Japanese investment firms, Yasuda Enterprise Development company and Iwakuni Foundation, led the $6 million series D round of financing along with Guava's new Japanese distributor. Other existing investors, including Abingworth Management, ProQuest Investments, and Skyline Ventures also participated in the round.

Guava's first product, the Guava PC, brings sophisticated cellular analysis directly to the researcher's laboratory benchtop. The compact, portable, expandable system is capable of providing a wide range of cellular assays on a single instrument.
