GUATEMALAN LEADER EVADES DEATH THREAT.

Interior Minister Rodolfo Mendoza said the attacker tried repeatedly to drive his truck into the president, first striking a bodyguard on horseback and then security vehicles. The bodyguard was treated for a broken arm.

When the attacker persisted, bodyguards shot him three times, killing him instantly.

Mendoza identified the attacker as Pedro Aroldo Zaz Rompich, 24. He gave no further details. A motive was not immediately known.
