GTE TO SUPPLY CABIN EQUIPMENT FOR LUFTHANSA'S TRIAL OF SATELLITE-
COMMUNICATIONS SERVICE; GTE'S FIRST TRIAL WITH A EUROPEAN AIRLINE
OAK BROOK, Ill., May 18 /PRNewswire/ -- In its first formal collaboration with a European airline, GTE Airfone will provide cabin equipment for Lufthansa's upcoming trial of satellite-communications services. Terms were not disclosed.
During the 12-month trial, which begins July 1, the German carrier will use a 737-300 and a 747-400 to investigate passenger reaction to air-to-ground telephones on both domestic and international flights. Satellites will relay telephone calls from the aircraft to the ground.
GTE Airfone, the world's leading provider of air-passenger communications services, will furnish the telephone system and equipment that will interface with satellites. Lufthansa will test a seatback- mounted telephone on the 737-300 and centrally mounted, cordless telephones -- that can be used at any seat -- on the 747-400.
"GTE Airfone has a proven track record for air-to-ground telecommunications in the United States and Canada, and we're pleased Lufthansa has selected us to supply the cabin equipment for its European trial," said Robert C. Calafell, GTE Airfone president. "Satellite- based services are the next frontier in air-passenger communications, and we expect to gain valuable experience from this trial."
During the trial, passengers will be able to call anywhere in the world while the plane is on the ground or in the air. Rates will be set by Lufthansa.
GTE Airfone, based here, provides air-to-ground public telephone service to passengers on commercial aircraft. The Airfone service is available on approximately 1,700 aircraft operated by 11 U.S.-based airline companies and Air Canada. GTE Airfone is a wholly owned subsidiary of GTE Corp., which is the fourth-largest publicly owned telecommunications company in the world.
