GTE SPACENET AWARDED CONTRACT

MCLEAN, Va., Jan. 11 /PRNewswire/ - GTE Spacenet Corp. said it has been awarded a multimillion dollar contract to provide AmericaTel Corp. with teleport facilities for international satellite communications. The teleport will be the first international teleport in Miami dedicated completely to offering voice and data services between the United States and Latin America. AmericaTel, through the new teleport, will offer international satellite communications services operating with the INTELSAT system. AmericaTel will serve the needs of the increasing number of companies conducting business between the United States and Latin America. "Latin America is a dynamic and rapidly growing market. Regulatory barriers to international trade are coming down. Governments are supporting more open conditions for telecommunications diversity, which encourage economic growth. AmericaTel is well-positioned to lead the way," said Raymond I. Marks, vice president/sales and marketing, GTE Spacenet.
Patricio Northland, president of AmericaTel, said: "We believe our operations will be very valuable to the city of Miami and to the Latin American community doing business in the United States. Miami has become the hub for business between the United States and Latin America, so we needed a company with an excellent international reputation. We could not have made a better selection than GTE Spacenet."
AmericaTel Corp. is based in Miami and provides international and domestic telecommunication services, including very small aperture terminals, international business service and intermediate data rate services, focusing on the needs of international companies conducting business in the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean region.
AmericaTel is in a joint venture company between Northland Communications and ENTEL Chile, the largest long-distance carrier in Chile. In the future, other Latin American carriers and telecommunications operators are expected to become partners in AmericaTel.
