GTE MOBILE COMMUNICATIONS AND HERTZ TO DEPLOY GTE'S CELLULAR CREDIT CARD
 PHONE IN SAN FRANCISCO
ATLANTA, June 15 /PRNewswire/ -- The Hertz Corporation and GTE Credit Card Phone today announced the deployment of GTE's CCP 2000 cellular credit card phone in Hertz vehicles in San Francisco.
"The Hertz/GTE credit card phone program has been successful in 24 other markets," said Roy Ritenour, manager-service quality for The Hertz Corporation. "We're expanding deployment to San Francisco because we've found that our business customers need to stay in touch with the office while traveling. They also enjoy having immediate access to a total communications network with just a slide of a credit card."
Customers renting cars equipped with cellular credit card phones are able to place and receive calls by activating the phone using a major credit card. The customer simply slides an AT&T Calling Card, MasterCard, VISA, American Express, or Diners Club Card through the phone's card reader. Customers receive a detailed listing of their cellular call charges on their monthly credit card statements, which saves them time during their rental because they are not confronted with additional billing procedures at the rental desk. With the proprietary GTE Billing System, Hertz is relieved of all billing and administrative responsibilities because the phone automatically reports call data to the GTE billing center.
To meet the needs of the mobile executive, the GTE CCP 2000 also allows "plug-in" access for facsimile and laptop computer transmission. On-hook dialing and the convenince of handsfree operation, or "speakerphone" capability, provide added safety.
"Our market research shows that customers want the phone's easy-to- use features," said Dave Smith, general manager of GTE's credit card phone organization. "Our new credit card phone makes deployment much easier. Its unique design allows the phone to be used on any cellular system in North America."
The GTE CCP 2000 phone will work on any cellular network due to one of five patent-pending design processes that allows the phone to collect calling-data information and upload it to GTE's billing system.
Cellular credit card phones are currently used in rental cars, limousines, cabs, on off-shore drilling rigs, recreational and commercial ships, buses and in remote areas where no hard-wired telephones are available. At present, credit card phones are deployed throughout the United States and Canada.
GTE and Hertz signed a multi-year agreement in January 1990, and expect to install some 50,000 in-car credit card phones during the term of the contract.
GTE Credit Card Phone is a part of GTE Mobile Communications, which provides support services to GTE's cellular interests (GTE Mobilnet -- a wholly-owned subsidiary; and Contel Cellular Inc. -- a 90 percent GTE- owned company). Through these entities, GTE provides cellular telecommunications products and services to more than 52 million "POPs" (POPs refers to the population of an area multiplied by the company's percentage ownership in the cellular system serving the area).
Hertz, the nation's leading car-rental company, operates a fleet of approximately 420,000 vehicles worldwide from over 5,000 locations in more than 120 countries.
GTE (NYSE: GTE) is the fourth-largest publicly-owned telecommunications company in the world. With approximately $20 billion in revenues in 1991, the corporation is the largest U.S.-based local- telephone company and the second-largest cellular-service provider in the United States. GTE also is a leader in government and defense communications systems and equipment, satellite and air-to-ground telecommunications, directories and telecommunications-based information services and systems.
