(NYSE NYSE See: New York Stock Exchange :GTE), plans to deploy new Juniper Networks M160 Internet backbone (communications, networking) Internet backbone - High-speed networks that carry Internet traffic. These communications networks are provided by companies such as AT&T, GTE, IBM, MCI, Netcom, Sprint, UUNET and consist of high-speed links in the T1, T3, OC1 and OC3 ranges. routers with OC-192c/STM-64 interfaces on part of its next-generation OC-192c/STM-64 network. To meet GTEI's goal of expanding capacity while creating an open, multiservice core, the M160 routers will interoperate with advanced Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing See WDM. (DWDM (Dense WDM) The term given to wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) when significantly more channels were being added. Since WDM is increasingly more "dense" all the time, both terms are used synonymously. See WDM. DWDM - wavelength division multiplexing ) equipment and the installed base of routers currently deployed in GTEI's 17,000 mile fiber optic network. Each of the M160(TM) routers will aggregate several OC-48/STM-16 and OC-12/STM-4 links onto GTEI's first OC-192c/STM-64 trunks. "Our next-generation network will ensure GTEI will outpace the exploding demand for bandwidth from our business customers," said Steve Blumenthal, senior vice president, engineering and technology at GTEI. "We evaluated several routers in our search for technically innovative solutions to make our next-generation network a reality. We selected the Juniper Networks M160 router for its performance, interoperability with our existing equipment, compatibility with our next-generation technology architecture, and seamless integration into our network." The M160 is the first router to support OC-192c/STM-64 circuits with wire-rate packet forwarding, handling an aggregate bandwidth of 160 Gigabits per second (Gbps) with packet forwarding rates of 160 million packets per second (Mpps). Since each OC-192c/STM-64 interface connects to a clear channel 10 Gbps circuit, carriers like GTEI can simplify capacity planning and administration of their rapidly growing networks. "We are very pleased that GTE Internetworking has selected our newest addition to the Juniper Networks(R)family of routers, the M160 Internet backbone router, with the industry's first and only wire-rate OC-192c/STM-64 interfaces. "The M160 router supports multiple IP-based services with full performance and standard implementations that will enable GTEI to add to the services it offers its customers," noted Scott Kriens, chief executive officer and president of Juniper Networks.
