TO HELP FIGHT ILLITERACY IN OREGON
PORTLAND, Ore., Nov. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- GTE Directories, publisher of GTE's The Everything Pages(R) telephone directory, has donated $2,000 to Oregon Literacy Inc., a non-profit, volunteer program whose goal is to overcome illiteracy in the state of Oregon.
The money donated by GTE Directories will provide funding for support materials such as tutor manuals and student workbooks. Each student and tutor works with teaching materials developed by Laubach Literacy International.
The award is one of many made through GTE Directories' community contributions fund, which offers grants annually to qualifying non- profit community agencies.
Oregon Literacy Inc. was founded in 1965 to train volunteer tutors to teach, on a one-to-one basis, adults to read and write. Its headquarters is located in Portland. It has 26 volunteer councils around the state.
GTE Directories, a unit of Tampa-based GTE Information Services, is the world's largest publisher of Yellow Pages telephone directories.
