GTE CALIFORNIA REPORTS NO EMPLOYEE INJURIES, SPOTTED SERVICE OUTAGES AS WIND-SWEPT FIRES RAVAGE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif., Oct. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- GTE California had no reports of employee injuries or structural damage to company facilities by mid-afternoon today as 13 fires fanned by Santa Ana winds ravaged the Southland in seven counties.
In the primary and initial fire affecting its service area, the Thousand Oaks fire, which started yesterday, GTE's most significant outage has been the loss of a fiber-optic cable on Laguna Peak in the Santa Monica Mountains, severing communications between Pt. Mugu Naval Yard and the outside world. That cable span was lost this morning as the fire swept through the canyons, past Pacific Coast Highway to the naval base and Pacific Ocean.
Besides the Mugu outage, GTE had about 1,600 customers out of service in the 330 communities throughout its serving area, as of 2 p.m. today. The largest outage happened mid-morning today in the city of Mentone, near Redlands, where 1,200 customers lost telephone service after fire melted a 12,000-foot fiber-optic cable.
GTE reports other outages of 260 customers in Yucaipa and 139 customers in Homeland. It also evacuated its service yard in Laguna Beach about 2 p.m. today due to encroaching fires on neighboring hillsides, as well as its Mentone customer contact center.
Utility efforts to assess damage and coordinate service restoration are severely limited because emergency agencies are restricting utilities' access to fire-affected areas. However, GTE will continue to man its Emergency Operating Center, monitoring the situation, gathering damage and service assessments, and coordinating restoration efforts until conditions return to normal.
GTE will provide news media and emergency agencies periodic updates throughout today and tonight, until conditions are normalized.
